Question by DavidO: How can I fix my wireless home surveillance system to not interfere with my Lynksys wireless access point?
Every time I connect my wireless home surveillance system I cannot connect to the internet. I have to unplug the power to the camera so that I can connect to the internet. Some how I need to change the frequency levels on aether my Lynksys access point or on the security camera. The Lynksys is connected to the router and the camera to the wireless receiver. how can I fix this issue?

Its not necessary to change the frequency – just the channel within the frequency.There are a total of 11 channels available. Its probably easier to change the linksys than muck around with the surveillance system.To get to the router, you just type its IP address into an internet browser’s address line (probably best done with the security system off, or plugged in to the router with a cable to prevent getting kicked out!). Once you have logged into the router I believe for most linksys units you can find the settings for channel on the wireless tab at the top of the home page. Once changed and saved, restart the computer and scan for your wireless network. You should then be able to reconnect to your router’s new settings. If you run into trouble, linksys’ website www.linksys.com has help specific to each model and version number.

Question by J: What did you pay for your Security System equipment and Installation and what is your monitoring fee?
I just had a door to door salesman make a very appealing offer for a free security system and installation, for $ 39 a month, including tax.

I’m just wondering if this is a reasonable fee or not and if the system/installation are typically free.

I would check out the company first. Some of them have had some bad problems with contract issues. It may seem cheaper up front to go this route, but it generally isn’t cheaper in the long run.

You do have a different option, which is much less expensive. You could “do it yourself.” Just purchase the system thats right for you, install it and purchase monitoring. Much, much cheaper.

How secure are these devices. Could someone “look inside” from the outside?

Are they scrambled or security enabled?

It really depends on what type of wireless encryption is used. I would not use WEP, as this is easily cracked.

Use WPA or WPA2 with a tough key, and your network is pretty much impregnable wirelessly.

You did not specify the system, but any decent wireless security device SHOULD allow encryption.

Video of three criminals breaking and entering my home. UPDATE: 01/05/13 – Two arrests have been made in connection. At 00:15 – Criminals 2 and 3 check the back yard area while criminal 1 rings the doorbell 4 times. Criminals then congregate in the back yard and try kicking the back door one time. At 1:36, Criminals 1 and 2 eventually kick in the door. At 1:56 – Interior video of Criminals 1, 2, 3 entering the back door. At 5:08 – Criminal 1 finally notices surveillance camera after a small lighted Christmas tree is turned on by a Clapper (apparently due to them making noise). He then covers his face, proceeds to turn the camera towards the wall and eventually cuts the wire. The video ends after the criminals pour liquid bleach into the camera DVR box, shorting the electronics and charring the cables. The hard drive survived. Please, be civil in the comments.

We are looking into adding window sensors to our monitored home security system, but our service is charging $ 2000 just to add them. Is there any way we can add them ourselves and connect to the system? Or would it be good to switch to a new security company and have them install everything over again? What is the best option?

Well with out knowing what if any spare capacity your current system has,there is no way to guesstimate the cost. It could be as simple as running a couple of new wires all the way up to installing a new control center.
